Experience
During the '90's Dick founded and led the Terrace Point Action Network in a fight to preserve the Terrace Point wetland, coastal bluff land and Younger Lagoon bird sanctuary.
As a senior advocate and a leader in the DeAnza mobile home community, Dick is also acutely aware of the shortage of affordable housing in Santa Cruz.
Fortunately, Dick's experience as a Planning Commissioner has given him insight into how the the two issues of environmental protection and affordable housing can be reconciled. As a councilperson, Dick will protect open space lands. But he also strongly supports multi-unit infill developments, such as the one recently approved for the Chestnut and Laurel area.
Dick also has the ability to analyze a budget, a quality sorely needed on the City Council. His many years with IBM taught him how organizations operate within a very formalized budget process. He knows how to implement change within this difficult structure, and how to work within the structure to save tax dollars without imperiling needed services.
Finally, Dick is a consensus builder and peacemaker. He adheres to his core principles without alienating those he is working with.
